The Lectionary

What is a Lectionary?
A lectionary is a selection of passages taken from the Holy Scriptures (“Lectiones”) to be read during services throughout the year or on specific occasions.

We find in the Farnese Lectionary the following Readings (in the order in which they appear in the codex): Gospel reading for the third Christmas Mass, John I, 1-14; Gospel reading for the first Advent Sunday, Luke XXI, 25-33; Gospel reading for All Saints (1 November), Matthew V, 1-12; Gospel reading for the Epiphany, Matthew II, 1-12;  Gospel reading for the feast day of San Pietro in Cathedra (18 January), Matthew XVI, 13-19; Gospel reading for Easter Sunday, Mark XVI, 1-7; Gospel reading for the Octave of Easter, John XX, 19-31; Gospel reading for Pentecost, John XIV, 23-31; Gospel reading for All Saints’ day (1 November), Matthew V, 1-12; Gospel reading for the third Sunday after Easter, John XVI, 16-22; Gospel reading for Saint Michael (29 September), Matthew XVIII, 1-10
